As the lights dimmed, the crowd funneled back to their seats, rife with anticipation as they watched each band member assume their position on stage. The crowd began to roar as the first notes rang out, and lead singer Miles Doughty stepped up to the microphone. Familiar melodies echoed throughout the Blue Hills Bank Pavilion; this was Slightly Stoopid, bringing a little slice of Long Beach to the east coast. As the band played, one couldn’t help but be reminded of early Sublime and a youthful Bob Marley.
Slightly Stoopid is no small band, consisting of eight members in total, all of whom played incredibly well together. Ryan Moran’s drumming was tight and rhythmic, while the horn section consisting of DeLa, C-Money and Karl Denson was soulful. Kyle McDonald’s guitar work was masterful, while his backup vocals were the perfect companion to Doughty’s. Oguer Ocon and Paul Wolstencroft’s percussion and keyboard sections rounded out the full and rich sound.
Throughout the night, Slightly Stoopid emanated good vibes with a sense of musical proficiency and a level of technicality not often matched by other live bands in this day and age. Playing through the hits and some slightly deeper cuts, the band played a set that was able to be thoroughly enjoyed by the most hardcore fans of the band, as well as casual fans of the genre. Slightly Stoopid proved to be a must see band, so if the opportunity arises and you’re looking for a great live show, don’t hesitate.
