Even though it is difficult to get away from the recent “dubstep†craze, while attending a DJ set, Shadow has kept true to his roots over the years as a hip-hop DJ. Currently on his ‘All Basses Covered’ tour, Shadow has dived into older material to get the crowd moving, and also dropping new beats that feature fresh MC’s.  He communicated just enough to keep the concert goers engaged on what he is doing on stage, spinning based on our response, it seemed. I had never seen DJ Shadow live, or listened to much of his music, but throughout the sold out theater, I kept hearing people say they’d been “listening to DJ Shadow for years,†even remarking how well he has preserved his sound–well composed tracks, with few “robot†sound effects. His breakdowns were dancy, rather than trancy.
At it for more than 20 years, DJ Shadow has definitely made a home for himself in the underground hip-hop scene. Building a large fan base in the U.K and America, he has gained quite a bit of stardom through other forms of media. From late night network TV performances on David Letterman, to a featured character in ‘DJ Hero’, an Activision video game to which he also contributed a couple mixes.
Head on over to Shadows website, http://www.djshadow.com/, for complete details on his current tour, and while you’re there visit his online store where he has apparel and featured collections dating as far back as 1992.
We apologize for the quality of the pictures. The promised photo pass was not left for us at Will Call. Stealth shots were all that was allowed.
