Friday at Lupo’s Heartbreak Hotel in Providence, R.I was a night to remember thanks to Slightly Stoopid. Based in Ocean Beach, CA these guys play a mix of reggae, punk, funk, and a touch of metal creating an energy-filled and upbeat sound. The band rocked out to some of their most well known tracks such as Running With A Gun and Collie Man (from the 2003 album Everything You Need), and 2 am (from the 2007 album Chronchitis), along with some amazing covers including Leaving on a Jet Plane (featured on Everything You Need), and Express Yourself, originally by Charles Wright. Beyond the amazing music, what really makes Slightly Stoopid shows over the top is the connection they have to the crowd. Even the security at Lupo’s seemed to catch on to the laid-back vibe as fans in the front passed various joints up to the stage to share with the band. Not only can you see the connection between the audience and the band, but you can also see how tight knit the band members are with each other. Kyle McDonald and Miles Doughty spend the show swapping their instruments, taking turns with lead guitar and bass, while Ryan Moran on drums, OG on congas and percussion, C-Money on trumpets and keyboard, and DeLa on saxophone keep it rocking. If you can’t catch them on this tour, I highly recommend checking them out on their recently announced Summer Sessions 2014 Tour with NOFX, Stephen Marley, and G.Love & Special Sauce. They will also be playing a bunch of festivals this summer including Summer Camp (Chillicothe, IL), Bonnaroo (Manchester, TN), and Gathering of the Vibes (Bridgeport, CT).
