The Dirty Heads came to Lupo’s Heartbreak Hotel Friday night and stunned the audience with their California style. Based out of Huntington Beach Ca, the band effortlessly mixes punk, reggae, hip-hop and ska, forming an upbeat, summer sound which won the crowd over with the combination of good vibes and the warming weather. The band was touring for their latest album “Home: Phantoms of Summer- The Acoustic Sessionsâ€, which features the songs Garland and Sloth’s revenge (a nice tribute to the Goonies). The band had a good connection with the crowd and Dirty J, the lead vocalist, even brought a kid up on stage and gave him a mic half way through the song Antelope to help him with some lyrics he’d forgotten. The relaxed atmosphere of the show was clear through the ever present cloud of smoke above the crowd. The wide array of bongos being played by John Olazabal created the dancehall/reggae feel to their set while Matt Ochoa on drums gave it the punk rock, hip hop sound. The solid connection between the two drummers combined with the chemistry between the two frontmen, Duddy B and Dirty J made for an amazingly tight show. The verses from Duddy B, guitarist and vocalists, show a heavy influence from Beastie Boys while his guitar playing pays homage to the likes of Sublime and Bob Marley. The last key to the Dirty Heads tone were the heavy, bouncing bass lines of David Foral. It was an extremely entertaining show and I recommend you find a way to make it to one of their shows before the tour ends in May.
