Lupo’s Heartbreak Hotel housed the indie rock band from Manchester, England The 1975 on May 9th. The tour was for their self-titled album, which ranked number 1 on the UK Albums Chart only 8 days after its release on September 2, 2013. The band then found success in America as well with their singles “Chocolate” and “Sex” securing them as opening acts for both Muse and The Neighbourhood. The show was a perfect combination of a dazzling light show, strong stage presence, and tight musicality. The 1975 opened with their single “City†in front of blazing white lights, creating a mysterious silhouette of band members, followed by intense strobe lights over both the band and audience. The simplicity of using almost exclusively white lights was a unique look and complimented the music perfectly without becoming the main attraction. A few songs into the setlist, the lead singer/rhythm guitarist, Matthew Healy, was singing lyrics in between sips of wine from the bottle he was carrying around stage, making it apparent that he was totally comfortable in front of a sold-out audience. The lead guitarist, Adam Hann, not only had great tone but also used a variety of effects pedals to create long, spacey intros that never lost the listener’s attention. The solid connection between the drummer, George Daniel, and bass player, Ross Macdonald, tied the instrumental section together creating a sound that isn’t typical of most brit rock artists. The set list slowly progressed through sentimental ballads, upbeat pop songs and inde rock sounds, displaying the wide array of styles touched upon by the brit rock quartet and showed that they’re much more than just another UK pop group. The band poured everything they had into the show the whole night and delivered a flawless, all-around entertaining performance.
